PAPER SELECTION CAN IMPACT PRINT DOCUMENT SUCCESS

Increase Effectiveness of your Documents by Selecting the Right Paper

Paper selection is an important component of any printed document. There are a number of factors to consider when choosing the right paper for your project.

  • It’s best to determine the paper before you start the design. Discuss your paper needs with your printer or supplier early in the project. Have the paper in mind when you design.

  • The heavier the paper, the less you can see through it. In other words, heavier paper has a greater opacity. Paper weight is measured by the fixed weight of 500 sheets, designated in pounds. Pamphlets and brochures are usually printed on 50 to 80 pound text paper stock, and covers on 65 to 100 pound cover paper.

  • Bright papers improve contrast because the paper reflects more light.

  • Colored papers help increase effectiveness. Studies show that colored paper had an increase in sales of more than 46 percent compared to white paper.

  • Consider the folding, finishing or binding processes involved when you choose the weight and grain of the paper.

  • The surface of paper affects the way images print onto it. Glossy paper is "sealed" or coated; therefore the ink dries by evaporation. Textured surfaces are not "sealed" and the ink is absorbed into the paper, making the colors less intense.
